Why do I need to resize pictures anyway?
Many cameras now produce images with large file sizes, with anything from 3 Mb to 25 Mb or more. Most of the information in these files is only useful for printing by specialists. It will never be used to show the picture on a screen, so it is only wasted space which means it will take much longer to upload your pictures, and make it much slower for other people to download them.
So how do I resize them?
There are lots of ways , but if you are using Windows, there is one way which is very, very easy. You just right-click on the picture, and choose Resize Pictures, and choose the size you want. BUT FIRST you have to install this small free program you can download by clicking here:-
Image Resizer Program (free)
Remember, after you've installed it, you don't need to start a program to use it. Just find the photos you want in the Windows file Explorer, right-click on them, choose Resize Pictures and then choose Large.
It won't change your original file, it just creates a smaller copy with the same name and the word "(Large)" after it.
On screen, it will not appear any smaller, but it will be much faster for other people to view.
You can select lots of files and do them all at the same time. The resized images will nearly always be less than 1 Mb, and are perfect for websites.
Then you can upload those files.
(If you want more information about this little program, you can find it here.)
Can I use an online service to resize my pictures?
Yes, you can use a free online service like this one http://www.picresize.com/ - but you have to do each picture separately.
It's much easier if you use the little program above, because you can do them all at once.
What if I have a Mac?
Maybe one of you nice Mac users (hello Roland) will write a good help item for Mac users and post it on the site?
